Principal’s Message ~ May 3rd
Dear Queen Elizabeth School Community,
It is hard to believe it is already May! We have welcomed the sun and warmer weather here at QE with renewed energy and enthusiasm for outdoor play and activities. Below are a few important dates, activities, reminders and information that we wanted to communicate.
Tuesday, May 4 – Early Dismissal Day
Students dismiss at 12:24 PM on Tuesday, May 4th (tomorrow!). Staff will be engaged for the afternoon in a Professional Development Collaboration Session continuing our work on Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism. Please be on time to pick up your child at the 12:24 PM bell.
Welcome to Kindergarten – May 4, 5 and 7th
Please join me in welcoming the newest members of our School Community, our incoming Kindergarten Class of 2021-22! Our Welcome to Kindergarten event this year is spread over three days and will be held entirely outside with mask and distancing protocols in place. Our incoming Kindergarten students and their families will have a chance to meet our staff, receive some school readiness resources and information and ask any questions they may have about our school.
Safety and School Reminders
A reminder that dogs are not permitted on School Grounds even when leashed or carried. As dog lovers ourselves we appreciate our furry friends and understand families are often getting their much needed dog walks in as they pick up or drop off students each day. We are pleased that you’re walking to and from the school as well, as it greatly helps reduce traffic and congestion on our streets at these busy times. We ask that you plan your pick up and drop off locations with your child to allow you to be off school grounds to meet your child, and distanced from others. If you are a caregiver of a younger child K-2 and need to pick up your child from their lineups we ask that you keep your dogs at home or have another person watch your dog as you pick up your child. We understand the vast majority of dogs are very friendly, well behaved and often welcomed by everyone but there are many within our community that are uncomfortable around dogs or young children may approach and startle them. For everyone’s comfort and safety we ask that you respect the rules prohibiting dogs on school property.
May 25th is class picture day. This year we will hold our pictures outside to maximize staff and student safety. Typically pictures will take most of the day and we start with our youngest learners to keep those clothes and hair dos looking their best!
As we wind down a challenging year, I again would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to our entire School Community – staff, students and families – for your diligence and support to face the challenges and adversity presented by COVID 19. While we hope for a return to normal and restrictions to ease we can’t be entirely certain what the opening of school in September of 2021 will look like. As was the case this year we will endeavour to keep you as informed as possible about school start up and safety protocols in a timely manner.
We do know for certain the following:
Current Grade 4 students – Will automatically be transitioned to Queensborough Middle School, meaning families do not need to register their children for Grade 5 to attend QMS in the Fall. Grade 4 teachers have recently completed articulation meetings where each student is discussed with QMS staff to best support their needs and classroom placements for Grade 5.
Online Learners – We are pleased to welcome back our Online Learners in September 2021! Our district did provide Grade 2-4 families in April the opportunity to express interest and register for a proposed Online Learning Program for the 2021-22 School Year but unfortunately there was not sufficient enough interest district wide to run the program. Current Online Learner families will automatically be included in our enrollment numbers and class formations for 2021-22 so there is no need for families to re-register for a return to in person instruction this fall. We will send separate further communication specifically to our online Learner Families this week; however, if you are a current Online Learner family please do not hesitate to reach out should you have further questions or concerns about your child’s return to in person instruction next year.
Grade 4 Graduation – Each year we hold a Grade 4 Leaving Ceremony to honour our oldest students and wish them well as they take the next step to Middle School. Last year we were able to hold a distanced event for families to attend but we do not anticipate the ability to welcome parents on site for this year’s event. We are in the process of planning our event now to be held in the final weeks of June – more details to come.
