Principal’s Message – May 16th

Dear Queen Elizabeth School Community,

Please see the following news, information, updates and important dates!

Welcome to Kindergarten Event

A huge thank you to staff, students and parents that participated in this year’s Welcome to Kindergarten Event on May 4th! It was a pleasure to meet the newest members of our school community as we prepare for your child’s all important first year of school this fall. If you were unable to attend our event and have yet to pick up your Welcome to Kindergarten Bag of resources, please contact the office to arrange a pick up time at your earliest convenience – 604 517 6080.

PAC Plant Fundraiser!

A huge thank you to our school community and the PAC for yet another successful fundraiser. The sun came out on Friday to support the delivery of plants and soil to families that purchased through the Growing Smiles Program. Thanks for all your support!

Learn to Ride Program, Bike to School Week, and June 1 Walk and Roll Event

Our Learn to Ride Bike program went very well last week, despite getting no help from Mother Nature. Students braved the elements and practiced their navigation and road sense skills on the large gravel field. Big thanks to Ms Debbie Ramen for setting up this fantastic learning opportunity for our students.

May 30th to June 3rd is bike to school week in BC and we are encouraging students to roll to school all week if they are able. If we run out of room on our bike racks we can certainly have students lock bikes up along the fence line of our basketball court area. If you are able to support your child riding to school safely any of the days in this week, please do so!

On Wednesday, June 1st of that week we will be holding a Walk and Roll Event to encourage families to leave their car and walk or roll to school. The purpose of the event is to celebrate and recognize families for making this effort but more importantly to remind families about how they can make the area in front of the school on Salter, safer for us all. We recognize that Queensborough is not walkable for all families, particularly those that live in the Port Royal Area, and that some days parents and caregiver schedules necessitate driving kids to school or to pick them up. Our main goal is to reduce congestion on Salter at drop off and pick up times and we are encouraging caregivers that need to drive to allow extra time at these busy times and park further away and then walk the small distance to school with your child. There are many Park and Walk options near the school along Salter, Howes, Hampton, and South Dyke Road. Just allowing that extra 10 minutes before and after school to Park and Walk will significantly reduce traffic flow on Salter, help make our school entrance safer and contribute to a healthy routine for you and your children. As a part of the lead up to our June 1st event we will be providing further Park and Walk information to daily drivers encouraging them to not only participate in our event but make Parking and Walking a part of your regular routine.
